Golden Osmanthus is native to Anxi County, Fujian Province. The plant is small tree type, middle leaf type, and early bud species. The tree is half-developed, with dense branches and short internodes. It has wide adaptability and strong resistance to diseases and insects. In 1984, Huangdan was designated as a national tea tree variety by the National Tea Tree Variety Approval Committee.
Huangdan is another superb product with a style different from Tieguanyin. It is mainly reflected in the "one early and two specialities". The first early, it is sprouting, harvesting, and going to market early. Huangdan is generally harvested in mid-April, more than 10 days earlier than general varieties, and nearly 20 days earlier than Tieguanyin. Two specialities are "yellow, uniform and thin" in appearance and "fragrant, odd and fresh" in inner quality.
Huangpi is the core parent of oolong tea breeding, and it is highly representative in oolong tea germplasm. The publication of its genome can allow us to have a deeper understanding and use of oolong tea varieties, which is of great significance for the breeding of improved varieties and the research on the characteristics and quality of oolong tea.
